Breaking Barriers Award
Feb 10, 2018
Action Together New Jersey (ATNJ) was honored with the Breaking Barriers Award from CAIR-NJ. The award was presented this year at Pines Manor by Roula Allouch, CAIR National Chairwoman; Nadia Kahf, CAIR-NJ Chairwoman, and Ahmed Al Shehab, CAIR-NJ Founder and National Board Chair. This year’s keynote speaker was Linda Sarsour, American activist and co-founder of Women’s March.
The Breaking Barriers Award is an annual award given to an individual who effectively worked with others to break barriers, whether it be racial barriers, faith barriers, or gender barriers. This year’s Breaking Barriers Award was given to Uyen “Winn” Khuong, Executive Director of Action Together New Jersey, for activism and inclusiveness. As the Executive Director of a grassroots group who “met” online, she has provided leadership to shepherd this group of virtual citizens, every day New Jerseyans who care about their country, into action. Some of their initiatives included running a nationwide membership drive for CAIR and CAIR-NJ, organizing small group socials with ATNJ members and CAIR-NJ members, voter registration drives in central and south New Jersey to register Muslim American voters, Know Your Rights workshops, and holding a No Hate Vigil in northern NJ.
“We all know how difficult it is to organize a large group of geographically diverse people. ATNJ not only achieved this, but also managed to be politically effective in less than 12 months with over 18,000 members in New Jersey. We all have a lot to learn from these persistent grassroots activists.” Ahmed Shebab, founder CAIR-NJ.
“I am so humbled to accept this award on behalf of the dedicated volunteers and members of ATNJ. We endeavor to be deserving of this recognition and strive to be effective allies to our Muslim American brothers and sisters against any attacks on this community of Americans. We stand united and encourage all New Jerseyans to join us in action.” Uyen “Winn” Khuong, Executive Director of Action Together New Jersey.
